A construction site changes shape every few weeks. A haul road moves. A gate shifts. The basement ramp finally opens. Each time, the lines on the ground have to keep up, or people get confused. And confused people on a building site get hurt. We've marked sites for Tier 1 builders like Hutchinson Builders, Lendlease, Laing O'Rourke and Richard Crookes. This is what we've seen work on NSW sites, and what tends to go wrong.
Why Does Temporary Line Marking Matter So Much on a Building Site? Think about it. Trucks, plant, workers on foot and, near the fence line, the public. All squeezed into one tight space.
• Clear lines tell drivers where to go, without someone waving at them all day. • Marked walkways keep workers out of plant swing zones. • Fewer "where do I drop this load?" calls over the radio.
Under NSW WHS laws, the principal contractor must manage traffic risks on site. Good line marking is one of the cheapest, clearest tools for the job.
Which NSW Rules Apply to Construction Site Traffic Management? It depends on where the work sits. • On or beside a public road: Transport for NSW's Traffic Control at Work Sites manual and AS 1742.3 apply. You'll need a Traffic Guidance Scheme prepared by someone with the right TfNSW training. • Inside the site boundary: your site traffic management plan, under the WHS rules. • Car parks in the finished building: AS/NZS 2890 covers bay sizes and layout.
Our part is simple to explain. We make the ground match the plan. If your plan shows a one-way loop, our arrows say the same thing. Which Temporary Line Marking Suits Each Stage of a Build? Material Best for What to know Waterborne paint Early works, laydown areas, short stages Fast to apply and easy to remove later Removable tape Very short stages, indoor slabs Peels up cleanly, but can lift under heavy tyres Thermoplastic Haul roads and gates with heavy plant Tough and long-wearing, made for big machines
Thermoplastic earns its keep on busy haul roads. One site supervisor told us our thermo lines were still holding up under heavy machinery weeks later. How Do You Pick the Right One for Your Site? • How long will this layout stay? A fortnight and a year need very different products. • What's driving over it? Utes are one thing. Excavators are another. • What happens next? If the slab gets polished or coated later, pick something that comes off easily.
What Should a Construction Traffic Layout Show on the Ground? Zone Typical marking Why it matters Site gates Hold lines and arrows Controls trucks crossing footpaths Haul roads Edge lines and direction arrows Keeps plant on a set path Pedestrian routes Hatched walkways and crossings Separates people from plant Crane and plant exclusion zones Hatching Clear no-go area on foot Laydown and loading Bay outlines Stops materials creeping into roads
How Do You Remove Old Lines When the Site Layout Changes? Here's where plenty of sites slip up. Old lines left behind are a real hazard. A driver sees two sets of arrows and just guesses. Blacking them out works in some spots, but on a wet morning or in low sun, old lines can still show through.
Removal method Where it works best High pressure water blasting Paint, thermoplastic and tape. Vacuum recovery leaves it clean and ready to remark. Grinding (poly planing) Thick or stubborn lines. Vacuum recovery keeps dust down. Shot blasting Concrete slabs. It removes lines and preps the surface in one pass. Black out paint A quick, low-cost cover for short-term changes.
Can Line Marking Be Done Without Holding Up the Build? Yes. Trades shouldn't stand around waiting on us.
• We work 24/7, so we can come in at night or on the weekend. • We once marked an entire construction site in a single night. • On Parramatta Light Rail in 2022, our first big NSW Government infrastructure job, we finished on time and on budget.
Where Do We Mark Construction Sites Across NSW? Our base is 15 Brookhollow Avenue, Norwest. From there, nine line marking teams head out every day. We often work around: • Parramatta, where we worked on the light rail • St Leonards, where we marked a landmark Hutchinson Builders tower with eight basement levels • The Western Sydney growth zone around Badgerys Creek and Elizabeth Drive • Norwest, Castle Hill and Rouse Hill
Building further out? We cover Newcastle, Wollongong, the Central Coast and anywhere else in NSW.
Why Do NSW Builders Call City Linemarking? • CM3 certified, which many Tier 1 builders ask for before you set foot on site • Members of the Roadmarking Industry Association of Australia • $20 million public liability cover • 30+ staff and 9 active teams, so we can scale up fast • A free site inspection, plus quote replies within 2 hours
