A court looks simple until the lines are wrong. One crooked baseline and the whole game feels off. Players argue. Someone slips. At City Linemarking, we deliver sports court line marking for schools, clubs and councils across Sydney and NSW. Here is what to check before you choose, so your courts look sharp and play safely.
What Makes Court Line Marking Different from Other Line Marking? A car park line only has to be seen. A court line has to be exact, and grippy, and tough enough for years of sprints and sudden stops. Accurate markings matter for player safety, player enjoyment and fair gameplay. Get one of those wrong and you will hear about it.
Which Paint Is Best for Sports Court Lines? Why Do We Use Rubber-Based Paint on Courts? Because it works with the sport, not against it. Our rubber-based paint gives players better grip, which lowers the risk of slips and falls. It also lasts longer, so lines stay clear and crisp well past the first season.
Are Sports Court Lines Actually Non-Slip? They should be. Our approach focuses on non-slip lines that still stand up to regular sporting activity. If grip is a worry on an older court, slip testing can give you a clear answer.
How Big Should Basketball, Tennis and Netball Courts Be? Sizes vary by level and rulebook, so confirm what your club, school or association needs. These full-size figures are a handy starting point.
Sport Typical full-size court Detail we plan carefully Basketball 28m by 15m Key shapes and the three-point arc Tennis (doubles) 23.77m by 10.97m Singles and doubles sidelines Netball 30.5m by 15.25m Goal circles and thirds
What Is Different About Marking Basketball and Tennis Courts? Basketball courts have lots of short, curved and boxed shapes packed into a tight space. Tennis courts have long, straight lines where a small drift is easy to see. Each one tests a different skill. Basketball asks for clean arcs and corners. Tennis asks for steady, true runs from end to end. We plan the setout for each sport before the first strip of tape goes down.
How Do Crews Keep Court Lines Straight and Crisp? Patience, mostly. We tape each line with masking tape before any paint goes down. That keeps the edges sharp and helps avoid errors. It takes longer than freehand work, and the results show it. A tennis line that wanders by a few millimetres is the kind of thing keen players spot straight away.
Does the Court Surface Need Preparing First? Almost always. Paint sticks best to a clean, sound surface. We check for dirt, loose material and old paint before we start. A court that has just been resurfaced may also need time before marking, so check the surface maker's advice. Skipping this step is a common reason lines wear out early.
Can One Court Be Marked for More Than One Sport? Yes. Many school and council courts share basketball, netball and tennis on one surface. It needs planning, because lines cross over. Here is what we sort out first:
• Colours: each sport gets its own colour, so players can follow their lines • Priority: we confirm which sport matters most before we set out the layout • Clarity: we check that crowded areas stay readable from the sideline
When Does a Sydney Court Need Re-Marking? Faded lines are the obvious sign. Others are less obvious. Look for:
• Lines that are patchy or hard to see in low light • Flaking paint that catches players' shoes • A change of use, such as adding netball to a basketball court • A resurfaced court that has no lines yet
We mark courts at school grounds in Blacktown, council parks in Penrith and community halls on the Northern Beaches, to name a few. Schools often prefer work during holidays, and we can plan around that.
